Hair Salons & Barbers methodology

How Top10Easy ranks hair salons & barbershops

Businesses cannot pay Top10Easy to improve their Rank. They can improve the real-world signals Top10Easy independently observes.

What goes into a Top10Easy Score

A hair salon or barbershop’s Top10Easy Score comes from nine things Top10Easy can independently check on the business's own website: whether hours are listed, whether online booking is available, whether a phone number is published, whether pricing is shown, whether the site publishes basic structured business information, whether services are listed, whether the site works well on a phone, whether the connection is secure (HTTPS), and whether the site shows photos of the business. Every one of these is checked the same way for every business in the country, regardless of size, location, or whether the business has claimed its profile.

Hours listed
Can a customer find this business's hours on its own website?
Online booking available
Can a customer book an appointment directly through the site?
Phone number published
Does the site publish a way to call the business?
Pricing shown
Does the site show what services cost?
Structured business info on site
Does the site publish basic, machine-readable business details?
Services listed
Does the site list what services the business offers?
Mobile-friendly website
Does the site work well on a phone?
Secure website (HTTPS)
Does the site use a secure connection?
Photos shown
Does the site show photos of the business?

A business profile may also show a public regulatory record or how long a business has been operating, where genuine public evidence exists. That information is shown for context only. It is never part of the Top10Easy Score or Rank.

Website Performance in the largest rankings

Where more than 100 hair salons & barbershops are rank-eligible in a place, Top10Easy's rank there also includes a tenth factor: Website Performance. Today that applies to Canada as a whole, Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Edmonton. Every other ranking in this category uses the nine signals above on their own, exactly as every other category does.

Website Performance
How quickly and smoothly does the business’s website load, as independently measured with Google Lighthouse?

Top10Easy measures each website three times and uses the median result. If those three results differ by more than 10 points, it measures five times instead. A measurement stays current for 30 days. If a fresh one isn’t available, a recent measurement may be reused for one further 30-day cycle and is labelled as such on the business’s profile. After that it expires, and the business holds no published rank in those places until it is measured again. A missing measurement is never treated as a score of zero.

In these places Top10Easy publishes a Top 100. If businesses are tied at the 100th position, all of them are shown, so a list can run slightly past 100. A business that has been measured but scores outside the Top 100 is marked that way on its own profile and is not given a numeric position. A business that has not yet been measured for Website Performance is marked as not yet measured. It remains fully listed in the directory either way.

What if Top10Easy hasn't observed something yet?

Top10Easy is expanding across Canada, and not every signal has been independently checked for every business yet. A business whose website hasn't been checked enough yet to compute a reliable score is marked Not Yet Ranked. It stays fully listed in the directory and can still be claimed, it simply doesn't appear in a ranking until Top10Easy has enough evidence.

Why some businesses are tied

When two or more businesses score identically on every signal above, Top10Easy shows them as tied rather than inventing an order between them. Top10Easy never uses a business's ID, its listing on other data sources, how much evidence has been gathered about it, random chance, or whether it has claimed its profile or paid for anything to break a tie. If the real, observed evidence doesn't show a difference, Top10Easy doesn't show one either. A tied Rank is a genuine result, not a placeholder.

What never affects Rank

Claiming a profile, paying for an enhanced listing, and how complete a business's profile is never change its Rank. Only the real, independently observed signals above do.
